IPY starts in March 2007, but not everybody is waiting until then to start celebrating the poles. L.A.-based artist Lita Albuquerque installation piece on Antarctica is ready and will be exposed Today, and just Today, because it's not allowed any kind of installation in Antarctica for pollution reasons. The piece was named "Stellar Axis: Antarctica" and was produced at the invitation of the US National Science Foundation's Artists and Writers Program.
During Summer, it's not possible to see the stars in the sky, so she reproduced the stars in the snow.
Lita's project has an accompanying website, which contain video and diary entries documenting the art installation process. You can also read the press release, and you can find out more about Lita Albuquerque on her personal site.
